A promising and highly ambitious addon, by a clearly imaginative and equally as ambitious creator. Peril completely blew me away with its enormous visage and rather mystical existence as its filesize was over an entire gigabyte and yet not a single soul has posted even a rating on Quaddicted yet (discounting myself). Around forty-five minutes to beat the first level, I quickly realised the first of many faults to do with the gameplay of Peril.
As a preface, I really did enjoy my time playing Peril (so far, I’m about 12 levels in to this beast – just under a third of the way in!) and I love the creativity and vastness of this mod, but you must realise that whereas something similar in scale like Ter Shibboleth succeeds in having a rather linear and straight-forward/readable series events taking place in large levels, Peril throws you out into the wilderness with a hatchet and a lighter and says ‘Right, off you go.’.
Frequently I was terribly lost in what I was supposed to be doing, it did help going in a bit of a loop around certain maps because you’d sometimes be pushed in that direction regardless but there were so many items and locations and enemies that I could never quite tell where exactly was the right place to go. It only really compounds from the first levels as the environments get more and more surreal and, frankly, without direction – another point of contempt.
There is no coherence or structure in the environmental design, and nothing that corresponds in gameplay. One moment, I’m in a futuristic city, the next I’m in an industrial park, then a medieval island prison with a pirate hideout and after that a mix of the prior two! Even when there is a running theme, which after these first four levels (yes, those are the FIRST four levels of the addon), it feels as if there is no environmental storytelling at all. I cannot tell what I am supposed to be doing or what is going on, I understand that it doesn’t really matter in Quake since that’s basically the first game anyway, but they at least had some semblance of a running theme or underlying story. Here, I can be in an underground lava facility and the next level I’m back to square one, yet it still pushes on! Not to mention the lack of variety in combat scenarios, the level and its twists, turns and hidey-holes aren’t being utilised nearly enough, so I’m just gunning down a load of enforcers through a straight hallway for three levels in a row.
To be clear; I do not dislike this addon, I am going to see it through to the end to hopefully provide at least some insight into this passionate and exciting experience. This is merely my initial thoughts.
After having played the entire mod over the course of the last three days, my final verdict is that none of the mod makes any sense and it manages to be just about playable until the end. I heavily disliked the amount of backtracking and running around in circles the player is forced to do, with a story that never progresses and a constant feeling of confusion and frustration at the lack of direction and purpose the game gives you. There appears to be progression in themes and gameplay but it all remains a long corridor, an open space and a feeling of emptiness once the hundreds of enemies are inevitably defeated. I had to bust out noclip on more levels that I care to own up to and I was ultimately dissatisfied with my experience. Still, I can verily appreciate the amount of effort and care – not to mention the fun I absolutely did have especially with some of the medieval themed environments. Overall, I’m bewildered by this addon’s sheer existence and I encourage people looking for a suitably ambitious and unique modding experience. Well done, even if I’m not a big fan. 3 stars.
Note: I recommend Ironwail for this mod but should any issues arise it may be down to hardware, it’s a chunky one.
