I love the map’s e1m2-meets-e1m3 atmosphere. It has a very nice old-school vibe, although the ammo is much tighter than in E1, and the combat is much tougher. There are some great arena fights.

This has the same gameplay mechanism as “The Subterrestrial Hangar,” namely that the player has to choose one of three modes before entering the map. In “Hangar,” choosing any one mode sealed off parts of the map, meaning that each mode entailed taking a discrete route to the exit. Here, the different modes tweak the gameplay but don’t seem to affect the map’s layout or the player’s progression. So this is less ambitious than “Hangar” in how it uses alternative paths, although I think the execution is better.

Super annoying enemy placement.

Brutal and not particularly enjoyable on normal (fiends spawning behind and instant killing you, lack of ammo/health, etc.). I got through it, but I wouldn’t classify it as “normal.” I changed the skill to “easy” and tried it again. The back-spawning issues were resolved and the lower enemy count solved the lack of ammo issue. Unfortunately, it made it rather too easy, but at least it was more enjoyable.

I really liked the amphitheater layout and, like Esrael’s previous map, the alternate gameplay options are cool (I just played the regular one). It’s unfortunate that the normal gameplay is setup the way it is, because the map is constructed well. Just keep in mind: normal is hard here, supplies are tight, and you will take unavoidable damage. If that’s your bag, then enjoy!
