Good pacing. Being true to the source material sequence breaking is possible, although going back to complete everything is necessary to get the secret exit - well worth it for the spectacle.
Thanks for the review! Where did you experience sequence breaking out of interest?
Perhaps i’m misremembering, but i recall grabbing the GL and entering the typical ending arena first with a GL jump (taking the long elevator ride - very nice reinterpretation of that ride), then completing most of the “second” unbridged area second, then finally finishing off the “first” area where the bridge leads, before completing the 4 secret keys to the secret exit.
Upon reflection, perhaps “sequence break” is a bad interpretation and rather the paths were deliberately left open to player choice?
Either way, it was a lot of fun. The elevator ride down, the chase, the secrets and key placement, and the secret ending were all delightful.
I played and enjoyed a lot of this, but when I got to the gigantic fight with all the spawning monsters I admit I sighed inwardly. I just don't enjoy these things, being much more of an explorer than fighter. What to do, then? Keep trying over and over, not really having fun, and learning to dislike the map? god-mode my way through and call it done? In the end I did neither: I just walked away, with happier memories of the early part of the map.
I won't award a score, as it would be unfair in a map that I didn't complete.
(To be clear: I don't think the Big Arena Fight is an unreasonable choice for a map designer to make. It's just not one that interests me; but I know plenty of other people love this kind of thing, and good luck to them.)
Hell yes! Absolutely loved this.
One of the best AD maps out there. A must play!
Great map with good fighting. Until the final. I see no point in that. Skipped.
Four months later, I replayed this and loved it even more. This time I played through to the end of the giant bunfight — not honestly enjoying it a whole lot, but pushing through to the end. It was worth it for what gets opened up afterwards, and by retracing my steps I was able to find all four of those weird-ass keys. At the top of the tower, I took out all the various knights and found the True Ending — very satisfying. I finished with 401 of 406 kills and 8 of 10 secrets. The last five kills might be inside the two secrets that I missed, but I think it’s just as likely that they were zombie wall-decorations that I forgot to frag.
Anyway, five stars from me, and I’m glad I returned!
