Last Outpost (sm183_artistical) is disappointing in 2018. Even given that it’s a speedmap, it has things in it that I just don’t expect to see:

  • If you drop down a level before the point where the game wants you to, you’re stuck.
  • Pressable button with shootable texture.
  • End-teleport trigger in the wrong place.
  • Lots and lots and lots of long corridors.
    Sorry, Artistical!

Bay Sick (sm183_dumptruck) is rather better: small and basic, yes, but with a coherent through-line and no obvious mistakes. (I have no idea how to get the yellow armour, though, unless you’re meant to rocket-jump.)

I quite liked Flouroantimonic (sm183_mariteaux), and found myself taken by surprise enough times that I ended with 9 health. The last combat is an interesting challenge.

Security Complex (sm83_newhouse) is a neat little example of what a base speedmap can be. It’s quietly satisfying with a clean and sometimes inventive progression. Enjoyable.

Finally, Pygmachophobia (sm83_prengle) rounds the pack off nicely with a well-constructed base that has a decent progression and a nice secret.

All in all, each map in this pack seems to be a little better than the one before, so that alphabetical order is a good way to play it!
