This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.quaddicted.com/db/canonical/7c3c3248aad0ed208ea072fc595220627d403f158a82884b0b6630f0f06229d9

I am biased as I was involved with this one. Great collection of maps across the board including one from sock. Off the top of my head maps from ioridyson, iyago, Jerry, KurtDamage, sixsik6, Stormcatcher and Thelokk all were excellent. Play the whole pack. Well worth it.

Obviously I’m very biased here, but when we set out to support Quake I for one didn’t expect this turn out or the overall quality of the submissions. Really, this pack will offer you some good fun and a couple of hours of pure vanilla enjoyment.

Really enjoyable mappack! Old hands and newbies - all delivering quality and that ‘Old-Quake’ feel!

I’ll strongly recommend this one!

Azure Wrath (mc_rj1_detrohogga) is a decent start — a good size with some amount of exploration. It loses points for a slight blockiness (maybe acceptable in a retro map?) and for some arbitrariness and opacity in the progression. Fun.

I was just enjoying Crawly's Spire (mc_rj1_jerry) when suddenly it just finished — without my even walking into a teleporter. Nice start, but needs a bit more to it.

Gone Fishing (mc_rj1_scump) is interestingly different (though involves little in the way of fish). It's overlit and blocky in a more than retro way, but it does keep throwing new ideas at me, and it offers some mass-gibbing of zombies which is always fun.

Castle Contraption (mc_rj1_ioridyson) is my favourite of these maps so far. It's nice to look at, while retaining some of the retro quality to the visuals; it's a biggish explorable space; it offers a variety of combat situations. If I were to criticise it, I might feel that all that space you can see, around and above you, might have offered more in the way of fighting and even of being able to get to more of the distant areas. But this is quibbling. A fine map.

erased by the dark (mc_rj1_deviltower) is clumsy and difficult to navigate, and replete will fulldark spaces. Yet somehow it managed to be an enjoyable challenge, even if I spent rather too much of my time running around trying to find what had changed after I'd pressed a button somewhere, or trying to remember where to use the key I'd just picked up. Better than it deserves to be. (134/136 kills, 3/5 secrets.)

The Marshes (mc_rj_thelok) is, and I mean no disrespect by this, a classic First Map. Shot, disconnected, aesthetically basic. It's still fun, but only for the couple of minutes it takes to play.
