I run Quakespasm 0.93 on Linux; besides the start.bsp → Start.bsp thing mentioned by Gioyo3aa, there are several maps that crash the engine when you save the game; a buffer overflow is reported. Gift of the Boxlord is one of those; I don’t remember all of them offhand. Not sure whose fault this is, though I’d guess Quakespasm has the issue. No problem with Darkplaces, but it’s sluggish on my hardware.

No issues with that map and saving/loading here on QuakeSpasm 0.93.1 on Arch.

Okay, must be an Ubuntu problem. I just forced the update to 0.93.1 from 18.10 and it still blows up when I save game in Boxlord. There’s one other, the one where you’re Santa, which also blows up on me. Gah.

Regarding the buffer overflow when saving some maps in Quakespasm, it’s triggered by an extra long value (>512 chars) for the “wad” worldspawn key on some of the maps. It’s patched in Quakespasm SVN r1607 but not released: https://sourceforge.net/p/quakespasm/code/1607/
I think the buffer overflow is present in the original engine as well so it’ll affect anything that doesn’t patch this.

Since it’s a buffer overflow, it may or may not crash for you. Maps should avoid extra long keys, ideally the compile tools would warn about this, etc.
