Fire Is Raging Eagerly. Blu Lingers Underneath (fbj_ict) is maybe my favourite of these maps, and ebony fortress with satisafying combats throughout and a nice sense of progression.

CommonCold’s untilted conversion of DOOM E3M6 (fbj_cc) is mostly a reminder of how bad the original Doom maps were compared with the stndard we’ve all grown used to. Blocky, ugly, arbitrary, nonsensical. Makes me glad it’s 2024, not 1993.

Finally, Cromulent Fuckcrustable (fbj_cc2) (the Slightly Secret map) was OK, though it was disapointing that after acquiring the rocket launcher and surviving all the waves of spawns, there was nothing left to do — nowhere to use the rocket launcher.

(It’s odd how often this happens. Yes, the RL is the most powerful weapon, and I understand why mappers don’t like to give it out too early and things too easy. But it’s also the most fun weapon, and don’t we want to have fun?)

In the end, I didn’t honestly enjoy this pack a great deal. I imagine it’s a nostalgic trip for people whose early years were more consumed by Doom than mine, but judging these Quake maps as Quake maps they’re mostly pretty mediocre. There’s not a single one here that I will return to, and that is not true at all of most jams.

Sorry to be harsh, but the truth is for me this was a two-star experience. High two, but not high enough to be low three.
