Pieces of One (smqe06b_generic
) is short and sweet: only 13 kills is not really enough to do justice to the whole of episode 1, but it does pay tribute to three of the maps, and the whole thing has that pleasantly familiar feel.
tribute to quake’s first episode done in a few hours (smqe06b_bambuz
) is less Episode One-ish but feels a bit more coherent. Also very short — just 15 kills.
I loved Quake Family Vacation '96 (smqe06b_lurker
), sixteen seconds of pure Quake. In and done. Perfect.
Episode 1 backward (smqe06b_neg!ke
) is a really nice conceit, but it would have needed to be a bit longer to pull it off. Instead, we have what feels more llike a mish-mash of different maps, as opposed to a clear progression. Still, it’s a fun map and very brutal.
When Worlds Collide (smqe06b_zwiffle
) brings the pack to an end, and is probably the most substantial of these small-scale offerings. Unfortunately, it maybe the one I enjoyed the least, especially at the end where the poor player is offered a parade of shamblers and not enough ammo to deal with them.
All in all, this is an enjoyable pack, but probably more for the Episode 1 nostalgia than for the maps’ inherent qualities. I’m glad to have played it, but probably won’t return to it.
