Like a lot of people have said, this episode is mostly OK. Lots of room-corridor-room stuff and not too many interesting gameplay scenarios. Lots of little streams with a bridge running over it (almost every map for some reason).
It never does anything too unique or daring, the latter levels are more interesting than the first 3 or 4 but almost every map follows the same structure.
The author clearly is capable of some interesting ideas but didn’t really run with them, like the room with the disappearing floor puzzle.

A really fun episode on skill 2. I’m not going to compare it to other episodes that have been released before or after this one because the only thing I’m interested in is the fun factor and did it make me smile while I was playing, or maybe swear a little, and it did ![]()
I was a little bummed out to see Chthon resurrected in DES1M7 “Realm of the Lava God” as I always seem to be a magnet for his fireballs, but this time he went down without much arguement.
I don’t remember where I got this originally, but it’s been sitting in my Quake directory with its many siblings for, I dunno 20 years maybe? I’m glad I dusted it off to play it again. It was worth it. Thanks to Hellscrag for the work you put into it and for sharing it with us! You know, you could build a few more levels…

Simple start map, with not much in the visual department. Everything besides the initial room is very plain.

Solid tech base map. Short, to the point, looks good, gameplay is engaging and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Stone themed map. Looks good, plays well, but feels a bit too repetitive. Maybe due to the limited enemy roster.

I like it. Reminiscent of E1M3, but with a tad less detail.

Map geometry could be better. Plenty of rooms have close to nothing going on, besides a random table. I do enjoy gibbing Zombies on the flooded areas, but even those could have been a bit more detailed. Has a secret map exit.

A good flooded cave themed map, with a small chapel near the start. Lacking on the visual department, but gameplay is pretty entertaining.

Starts with an outdoor area, that evolves into a mansion themed after Quake E2M5. Gameplay feels average, visuals as well. I like the initial outdoor area, for some reason. Not a fan of the multitude of underwater tunnels below the map, but they're not exactly required for progression.

Metal themed map with a nice flow. Has some resemblance to E1M5. Enjoyable map.

Metal/lava themed map, that ends with a Chthon fight. Visually, it's pretty good. Gameplay is alright, but it can be a bit cramped. Chthon fight is pretty standard. It's also easy to lose track of where to go next, in a couple of spots.
Still a pretty decent map though.

A mix of caves and Quake Episode 4 style map. It ends on a fight with a custom Vore enemy. Pretty standard, besides extra health and a slightly different skin. The map itself is of good quality, not particularly difficult. Visuals are average, nothing that will stick to mind. The cathedral itself lacks in detail.

Overall, a set of good maps, with average to good visuals. Gameplay is enjoyable, for the majority of them.
There's custom enemy variants, for the Deathknight, Scragg and Vore. But they're basically the same enemies with some minor visual differences and a bigger health pool. Had the potential to be an annoying addition, however, the new weapons serve to balance this pretty well.
A custom Super Nailgun, that acts like a shotgun, firing 10 nails per shot. Quite satisfying to shoot. There is also a custom Thunderbolt gun, that fires yellow, Scragg like projectiles, which is also pretty good.
You'll most likely have a good time playing this episode.
