I started out quite enjoying this as an old-school celebration. But as I progressed through the various maps, it started to feel more and more like a grind, until in the end I was more relieved than triumphant to finish. The last map in particular is an unrewarding trudge through ugly and illogical surroundings while beset by some very difficult and not entirely fair combats. It’s odd, given what great mappers are involved in this pack, but somehow it’s just not that much fun. Sorry.
Each map delivers a true vanilla experience with a fresh and modern design. The last level is just chef’s kiss. Oh, and the soundtrack is simply amazing. Recommended!
On the surface this looks almost too oldschool, dark, chaotic, with too many rough edges. But when you let yourself get fully immersed in this world you will get something so damn unique, mesmerizing, and captivating. The darkness, the music, the twisted rough brushwork. To me this is art. Same thing with combats - they look primitive on the surface, but in reality they are always interesting, engaging, forcing you to react to new situations in unique ways. What’s especially great is I got to use all my weapons almost equally. I never got lost, progression was always well explained, even in the most twisted and weird levels. Normally I’d give 4 stars when the brushwork is this rough and unpolished, but for the uniqueness I’ll go with 5.
Dark, sinister, foreboding, eeiry…. The mood of these maps is amazing. The music supports it well.
Brushwork is a bit on the scrawny side here and there, in other places it’s overly complicated, but overall it’s good. Very dark lighting, but it is part of the moodsetting. And hard to see in daylight.
Very good old-school maps, but if you do them in one go, they can tire you out, as MikeTaylor noticed. Somehow, they can really take the energy out of you…
Well done!
