Hello all! I am new to community Quake maps. I’ve played a few already and had a lot of fun, but I am wondering what the generally regarded “must plays” are.
Some of my must-plays:
Ceremonial Circles by CZG
Koohoo by Vondur
Vondur’s latest, Spires, is a great vanilla map.
Sock’s maps. He has had a few great standalone releases, and many maps on the Arcane Dimensions pack. My recommendations:
- Midnight Stalker
- Backsteingotik
- Ivory Tower
- The Horde of Zendar
- Castle of Kaahoo (legally distinct from Koohoo)
- Metal Monstrosity (requires Quoth)
- Behop Ranger and the wizards
- Solomon’s Tower
- All his maps on AD, and all maps on AD in general
Than’s maps. I think all of them. Quoth is one of more rude mods you can play.
Empire of Disorder by Tonhao
Terra and Honey by CZG. I think you must’ve played them already.
Masque of Red Death by Tronyn.
The func map jams and retro jams.
The Map-center’s retrojams.
The Xmas jams.
These jams are filled with both simple maps and huge or experimental maps made by random mappers.
For big, and well produced, great looking maps, Arcane Dimensions, Alkaline, Re:mobilize.
I do not think there is any “must play”, but for the first till getting used i would avoid jam packs, specially those from the last five years save for Map Center ones.
Some i could recommend to get into the game would be:
- Altar of Storms
- Marcher Fortress
- Gloomier Keep
- Antediluvian
- Adamantine Cruelty
- Mainframe Mayhem
- * Forwards compatible
Maps by Digs, Negke, Necros, czg, metlslime, Vondur, and RickyT23 should be sure bets for example.
But if you do not like Quake’s gameplay, you can go with partial conversions like AD, Alkaline, Copper, Re:mobilize, …
Ricky makes his maps really hard though. The ones using Quoth, maybe leave them for later.
Interesting you say that, as i am one of the few that has said that about him here on Quaddicted, and it was only on one of the encounters on a single map on nightmare difficulty. His Quoth maps haven’t received more comments about difficulty than his non-Quoth ones either.
Thanks everyone here for the recommendations, got a lot of fun out of them and haven’t even played half of them yet.
