Hello, folks.
I want to install Quake II on Windows 11 using the old CD that I bought 25 years ago. As soon as I click the .exe file, the splash screen shows and when I click “Install” the process crash.
I can download the game to Steam to $10, but I am not sure if still is going to work on Win 11.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

Best use a modern client: https://www.yamagi.org/quake2/ → “Precompiled Windows binaries”
I don’t remember the CD, is there a baseq2 directory on it? If so, just copy the contents of that into the baseq2 directory of the extracted Yamagi directory.
Quake II on Windows 11 sounds like a fun challenge! I’ve had success running it using compatibility mode or tools like Yamagi Quake II for modern systems. If you’re still having trouble, checking the community patches or running it in a virtual machine might help. Good luck!
I don’t install from a disc. Copy all files from CD to a destination folder and just click the launch icon. I’ve set mine up with QeRadiant and all my favorite mods already installed.

Getting the original installer to run on modern Windows can be tricky. As others have mentioned, the best option is to use Yamagi Quake II. Here is a quick guide on how to set it up!
Buying the game on Steam or GOG gets you the original (including the mission packs) and enhanced version. The latter won’t be compatible with mods but custom maps should work. Personally, I think it’s worth it just for the mission packs.
Years ago, I created a disc from c:\quake2 and made a copy of it. I just copy that back on to my c: drive and click the Applications exe and quake2 runs (no emulators).
This comes with a couple of drawbacks also. Not all mods work. As a (wod) fan I collected them all. Got more to work on win 10 but something is definitely changing. Bought a new computer in the past few months and can only get one or two to work correctly or I’m doing something terribly wrong.
Still working on getting rid of the horrible white windowed bar at the top but those are about the only drawbacks. Even juggernaut opens and runs and I can’t remember the last time I saw my juggernaut CD.
Got parts of wod 7.51 and wod 7.44 working. Says it has scanner and laser tripwires, push/pull and I remember using them. Weapons all change fine, new grenades fine, hook great but still can’t get some things to work.
