Playing my way through (many) custom levels in chronological order I have played this and the follow-up Autumn Haunting. And while I can see why not everyone likes the custom content, the perfect brushwork, the details, the amount of modifications and an interesting layout/map and gameplay (for a [Kona] map) should make this at least a 4.
Very much enjoyed this small mission pack. It is purely combat-oriented, but it’s not about horde battles, more like about adaptation to new threats… and that’s what I like! New monsters! There are lots of them, only basic fiends and scrags are vanilla, ogres and knights have different skins and sub-types, there are new creatures like small-&-fast fiends, fire shamblers, quick girls with grenade launchers… can’t avoid mentioning the Barons, who are always welcome! Plus sub-bosses: Queen Fiends aka Tanks and ogre/knight hybrid. Must admit that the final boss is a let-down: SPOILERS - he’s just a slightly modified Overlord from DoE. All three map designed well, looks nice, plays straightforward and provide enough ground for battles. New weapons are all fun to play (nothing super-special, but gives you a new field of experimentation). However, the freezing gun is point-less and don’t work that well, without a freezed model for monsters… But overall, Carved in Flesh is an enjoyable experience for those who love Quake’s combat and new foes!
many baffling design choices. maps are okay. new enemies and weapons are mostly bad. Flame Launcher, Ice Gun, and Flamethrower all feel really weak. Positron Gun is fun, but seems to crash the game sometimes. nearly all new enemies feel like a waste of time and effort. the “Hell Kittens” (??? bizarre name choice) are the best example of this, essentially just being re-skinned ogres that don’t fit the game’s aesthetics at all. skip this one.
